Street Directories were a commonplace across Britain in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. Not until the advent of telephones -- accompanied by a free directory of subscribers -- in most houses towards the end of the Twentieth did they fall out of use. The development of business listings in yellow pages was the nail in their coffin. However, telephone directories have never provided listings of inhabitants on a street-by-street basis, as did the original town directories. This information is not yet available from the United Kingdom Census after 1901. This reprint of the Street, Private Residents and Trades Directories from Kelly’s 1906-07 Directory of Hornsey and Crouch End, together with some contemporary advertisements, provides a fascinating picture of this part of North London in Edwardian Britain, and will provide an invaluable source book for family, local and social historians. |
